Software

I am using Investor/RT (IRT) charts. They are the same as MarketDelta charts without the Footprint feature. Since I wasn’t using the Footprint, I decided to switch to IRT to simplify things for myself and you.

You can obtain IRT charts here: http://linnsoft.com/

I am using Investor/RT with Market Profile Professional Edition. The difference between Professional and Standard is the ability in Professional to use the Volume Breakdown Indicator (cumulative delta) and to create custom indicators and signals using the RTL language. Regardless of what version you start with, you can always upgrade or downgrade instantly from within the software. Remember to keep things as simple as possible

I am using DTN IQFeed as a data provider. You can enable whichever exchanges you need data for a la carte.

You can obtain IQFeed here: http://www.iqfeed.net/

If you intend to run your charts using your broker’s data feed, then I suggest that you subscribe to DTNMA and schedule IRT to refresh the current day periodically to make sure your charts are current and accurate. Broker feeds are NOT designed to feed charts even though they may say so

Getting Started

Hardware

I have always kept my charts on a separate computer from my trading platform. I understand some of you are not able to do that due to budget constraints or the fact that you get your data from your broker. I am currently running the following specs for charting:

Dell OptiPlex 980

  • Intel Core i5 650 Processor (i3 or Quad core processors are fast enough)
  • 6GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz (4GB at any speed is enough RAM)
  • 600 GB 10,000 RPM VelociRaptor Harddrive (not necessary to have 10,000 RPM HDD)
  • 128 GB SDD Drive by Kingston in 3.5″ form factor used as startup and tick data drive
  • nVidia GeForce dual-head DVI video cards running a 6 monitor grid
  • Dell UltraSharp LCD monitors on 2 ErgoTron Quad stands running on DVI
  • Still using Windows XP Pro operating system but it is now safe to use Windows 7
  • APC 1500VA Battery Backup with only chart computer, main monitor and network switch plugged into battery side (as a minimum, get at least an APC 750VA UPS)
  • Logitech MX 518 wired mouse
